Question: A/C compressor seems to be failing slowly. Can it be saved?

I get occasional squealing from A/C compressor. Suspect clutch or bearing is starting to go. Dealer wants to replace for $$$. Can it be fixed instead of replaced? I have tools and mechanical ability so labor cost would be zero. Thanks!

I'm no mechanic, but I would definitely check the belts for obvious signs of glazing to see if this might be the source of the noise. That's obvious the cheapest/easiest fix. There are belt conditioning sprays that you can purchase at most auto parts stores to help diagnose the problem. You can also use a rolled up newspaper to check the fan clutch, to see whether that is slipping. If it is the bearing, you should be able to get to it, and as far as I know, that should be a serviceable item, but obviously, check in the manual to confirm before tearing into it.
